Deep caries lesions have traditionally been managed with complete caries tissue removal, a practice now considered as over-treatment and no longer advocated. The approach to deep caries management is shifting towards minimally invasive, biologic strategies aimed at preserving non-demineralized and remineralizable tissue, pulp health and vitality, and the long-term function of the tooth. In line with the minimally invasive, biologic approach, the priority when choosing a restorative material has shifted from simple preservation to active repair of the pulp-dentine complex.
